I called the guy. Turns out that:
1) this is an independent project of his, having nothing to do with the
Phonebook Corp. (A co-worker of his said he could be in deep dip for
using the office number for a personal project.)
2) He sounds like a dweeb with the soul of a bowl of cold oatmeal.
3) He sent me a packet of ravings. I've only glanced thru it, but "GBS"
is, of course, Geo. Bernard Shaw, and he thinks that something or other
in Shaw's writings is the answer to life, the universe, and everything
-- or something.
You can call him, too. If you get a co-worker, be sure to tell them
exactly what you're calling him about. They'll be soooo pleased.
Maybe I'll post more after I've waded thru more of the packet. Maybe I
won't.

Here 's a message most important to those in the NJ-NY metropolitan area,
or for those who visit:
WFMU (91.1 FM) is a long-standing member of the independent radio
community, operating at 1,440 watts out of Upsala College in New Jersey,
with an annual operating budget of $135K. Three area ``public'' radio
stations are trying to get them to reduce their wattage on an essentially
insignificant but legally-assailable overlap issue (the overlap was never
noticeable to me). This will reduce their contributor base to below the
point necessary for their continued operation.
FMU has a fantastic mixture of strange stuff, including music that
can 't be found anywhere else on the dial in the area. A good idea of the
station can be garnered through a look at their latest program guide (which
is much more than just a show listing). They were also the base for Sister
Krys' SubG radio program; they now broadcast the 1/2 hour of Slack every
Monday morning.
For more information, especially if you can honestly say that you 've listened
to the station (so that you can say so honestly in a letter of support)
write for a program guide and better explanation of the situation to:
WFMU
Upsala College
East Orange, NJ 07019
.
The program guide costs $1.05 to mail, so it would be nice to
include a one-dollar bill with your request---however, if it makes a
difference in your decision, leave out the dollar and write for the facts
(and the entertainment provided by the guide, which includes art by
Carol Lay and the incomparable Mary Fleener, reviews of books about community
and Texas border radio, more great cartoons, and articles with titles including
`The Four Rockabilly Horsemen of the Apocalypse', `Subway Survival',
and `Deep Dark Secrets of WFMU DJs').
