SONY APOLIGIZES FOR USING DEC. 7, PEARL HARBOR DAY
PARK RIDGE, New Jersey - Sony Corp. of America has apoligized to a
customer for using Dec. 7, the date of Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor
in 1941, as an example in an owner's manual of how to set the date on
its videocasette recorders.
The electronic company's apology was made in a response to a complaint
by Scott L. Edelheit of Boca Raton, Florida, who said his father had
been killed at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. The date was used in the
Japanese-printed manual for a VCR that Mr. Edelheit had bought.
"We try to be sensitive on these issues," Jason Farrow, a Sony
spokesman, said on Monday. "It would be irrational to think that a
company that does 25 percent of its business in the United States
would ever intentionally do anything like that."
