I'm sorry I'm so stupid, but salvation in the form of a followup
posting is at hand!
The hotline number staffed by D. Zappa (sounds like him on the tape
recording, anyway - his Dad can count better - he always runs out of
tape!) is 818 pumpkin, of course, not 800 pumpkin. (Like, I'm sure

This article was typed in to sun.junk (a local Sun newsgroup, which
features a lot of Xtian propaganda and calls for immediate execution
of prisoners on California's death row - I'm not making this up)
because I think it's a good article, and because I think Frank Zappa
wouldn't mind. USA Today might mind, but I think it would be pretty
funny to be taken to task for reprinting an article from USA Today
whose topic is censorship.
(Is laughing at oneself a viable defense in the State of California?)

An Opposing View
NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif. - The '90s are here! Let's smell them. Such
a familiar aroma: burning books in the distance - propelled in our
direction by gusts of hot air. Dear sweet Jesus! (ed. note - FZ was
raised Italian Catholic) Can't these Born-Again Republican state
legislators do something about their breath? It's got *sauerkraut*
all over it.
The so-called "ratings issue" surfaced in 1985 with the formation of
Parents' Music Resource Center, a tax-exempt, non-profit organization
starring the wife of Ronald Reagan's secretary of the treasurey and
the wife of a junior senator from Tennessee preparing for a
presidential bid.
With money from Occidental Petroleum, Merrill Lynch and others eager
to hobnonb with their fabulous husbands, they set out to provide
"consumer tools" to protect our children from BAD WORDS on obscure
heavy metal albums.
Can anyone protect the rest of us? Certainly not the record industry!
It signed an agreement with PMRC to engage in "voluntary labeling."
Imagine this Twilight Zone scenario: the Recording Industry
Association of America, which represents ONLY the label bosses, signs
away the First Amendment rights of all recording artists and music
retailers to a tax-exempt organization engaged in covert lobbying for
legislation, representing the lunatic fringe of Christendom.
The RIAA deal with PMRC was made in order to protect a piece of
record-industry legislation called "The Blank Tape Tax." This bill
was more important than maintaining any First Amendment protection of
free speech or guarding against religious interference in governmental
affairs.
They were "prudent businessmen." So, they bent over - and the bill
still didn't go through, and today we read about "emergency strategy
sessions" with industry big shots complaining about a "new McCarthy
era." Thanks a lot, guys.
Belief in "bad words" is a religious concept. Those who choose to
believe this voodoo are welcome to it - the First Amendment guarantees
that freedom. But it also guarantees everyone else that these "no
choice people" may not impose their beliefs on others through laws.
There is more at stake here than the rights of silly-looking rock
musicians to sing what they want. This kinder, gentler, thousand
points of state-sponsored censorship will return to haunt the jerks
who have proposed it.
