...Florida Sen. Connie Mack has unexpectedly sided wiht 2 Live Crew. He
said that "despite the fact the 2 Live Crew's lyrics are vulgar and offensive,
adults should have every right to buy the group's songs. Under our form
of freedom of speech, words are protected." At odds with several other
politicians in his state, especially Gov. Bob Martinez, a fewllow Republican,
Mack says federal Judge Jose Gonzalez was wrong to ban the sale of the
album to adults in South Florida becuse of the lyrics.
Brooklyn Rep. Major Owens has jumped on the band wagon as well saying, "I
don't agree with how 2 Live Crew is using rap with sexism and racism (???),
but I defend their right to do it. It is absurd trailing rap groups
around and arresting them . . . taking people's minds off real problems."
Owens is a bit of a novice rapper, using the art form to criticize the
Bush administration:
At the big white D.C. mansion
There's a meeting of the mob
And the question on the table
Is which beggars will they rob
Owens includes his raps in the Congressional Record and in today's
record Owen's latest rap message addresses the flag amendment:
Put hungry babies in a bag
Wrap homeless folks in the flag
Divert voters every day
Pretend real problems have gone away
...It's the all-American shame
Loonies and Presidents play the same game
Wave a flag to wow the press
Forget that 500 billion S&L mess.
Why doesn't THIS guy run for president?
