JUSTICE DEPT. INVESTIGATES CARRIERS' PRICING PRACTICES
" . . . One area of investigation will be the information exchange that
results from electronic fare filings with the Airline Tariff Publishing
Co.
[it is] said that the users of the ATP electronic fare display could
communicate with one another by "cryptic messages" contained in fares.
Officials have acknowledged the existence of what could be coded fares,
such as those prefaced by the letter code FU. It is thought to be a
shortened expression of defiance or challenge to a competitor, but this
meaning could not be confirmed.
"It's news to me," Neil Cleary, president of the Airline Tariff
Publishing Co., said. "Under the old system of coding FU used to mean
first class standby, but that system broke down years ago and all sorts
of combinations of letters and numbers have developed." "
