Some while back I sent a chain letter to this list, peppered liberally with
sarcastic comments, with a rider at the end about the First Church of the
Sacred Chain-Mail.

It turns out that some net.thought.policeman at CMU had noticed the words
"chain letter" and reported it to the University Computer Lab. I didn't get
thrown off the system, but it wasn't exactly fun having to report to room 101
to explain.

Actually, the report looked like it had been automatically generated by a
program looking for keywords. So just in case:

chain letter make money quick FBI KGB sell secrets to the Russians NSA
cryptography RSA DES nuclear weapons UFOs Majestic-12 hack crack steal
passwords security hole IRA Bader-Meinhof NRA Iraq supergun conspiracy
phone phreak Internet worm virus trojan horse Andrew System plant bomb

My brother just wrote from Iowa City, IA:

Someone has made a stencil showing "Bob's" face, and 18"
likenesses of him are appearing on garbage containers
throughout the city. Needles to say, but saying it anyway,
pandemonium reigns throughout the metropolis.

Way to go, "Bob"!
