No, no, no. Harvey Milk was the first gay city supervisor of S.F. (or OPENLY
gay anyway). George Moscone was the mayor of S.F., and he died too. They
both died. Courtesy of a fired, depressed, homophobic, right-wing, Twinkie-
twisted cop. Go figure.

Ah, yes, the Twinkie Defense. In the early 80s, Dan White shot George
Moscone, the Mayor of San Francisco, and Harvey Milk, a San Francisco
Supervisor who happened to be gay. Moscone was well known for his
tolerance of gays and his permissive policies, but this really was
beside the point. Milk just had the bad luck to be in Moscone's office
at the time. Dan White was an ex-cop and ex-city official of some sort
(I forget), and he was distraught because he had lost his job. He went
to see Moscone to force him to give it back, bringing his service
revolver in case reasonable discourse didn't work, I guess. Well,
who knows what was said and done, but the final result was that Danno
killed George and Harvey by shooting them in the head.

The rest be history. Dianne Fienstein took over as Mayor. Dan White was
tried for murder, but got off on lesser charges on the defense that an
excess of sugar in the form of Twinkies had deranged his mind prior to
the incident. The gays rioted in the streets, overturning and setting fire
to police cars in the process. Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys wrote a
song about the whole thing called "I Fought the Law and I Won."

When Dan got out of prison, he was moved anonymously to Orange County.
Some residents put out a reward to anyone who would find and identify
the ex-convict. Before he could be tracked down and presumably tarred and
feathered, Dan hung himself in the shower of his bathroom with a sheet.

At some point, a sculptor unveiled a tribute to George and Harvey that
featured Twinkies. It was reviled as being in bad taste.

Ain't life grand...

Rex

In a surprising move today, Judaism filed suit against the Catholic
Church, claiming Catholicism copied the "look and feel" of the
religion. Judaism, which has held the patent on the concept of a
monotheistic religion for over 3500 years as well as the copyright on
Yaweh(R) and the Old Testament(C), is suing for 2000 years of back
royalties. They are also asking that the court disallow the use of
the term "Judeo-Christian" from all textbooks.

The Pope was unavailable for comment, but a spokesman from the Vatican
stated the suit was unfounded as the patent on the concepts shared by
the two religions has long expired, and that the suit violates the
separation of church and state. Industry commentators point out that
monotheism actually was developed in Pharonic Egypt, although the
Egyptians failed to market it successfully.

Our Elders Speak Wisdom Society*
Incorporated under The Society Act of British Columbia
on January 15, 1990

Mission Statement
To preserve and publicly honor the wisdom, world views
and images of Indigenous Elders.
Our goal is to bring the wisdom and messages of
Indigenous Elders from around the world into the public mainstream.

Goals of Our Elders Speak Wisdom Society

The non-profit Our Elders Speak Wisdom Society provides a
cross cultural structure that enables natives and non-native people to
work closely with the Elders.
The goal of the Society is to see that Indigenous Elders around
the world regain their rightful place in modern society, sharing their
wisdom and awakening a global reverence for the Mother Earth. The
grassroots approach of the Society is to assist the Elders in the design,
deceleration and celebration of the _Worldwide Year Of The Elder_, (to
be publicly declared by the Elders themselves).

The Grassroots Steps to the World Wide Year of the Elder

o 1991- Our Elders Speak photographic tribute book and EldersU
speaking tour for promoting the Year Of the Elder project (and ongoing
fundraising).

o 1992- Our Elders Speak National Forum in Vancouver
(as preparation for the 1993 Global Forum)

o 1993- Our Elders Speak Global Forum: Indigenous Elders come
together from around the world for a week long conference. The
Elders themselves will be able to stand up and publicly proclaim that
a particular year will be declared as _World Wide Year Of The Elder_.
The individual Elders will then return to their home communities to
spread the word and to further develop their own Elders projects in
preparation for celebrating the _World Wide Year of the Elder_.

o 1994- Continue promotion of Year Of The Elder Project.

o 1995-96-Celebration and Fulfillment: The _World Wide Year Of The
Elder_. Indigenous Elders and Elders regain their rightful place in
modern society.

The benefits of Indigenous Wisdom continue generation after
generation.

Listen with your Heart: Our Elders Speak

Words from Elder Napoleon Kruger - Spiritual advisor to Our Elders
Speak Global Project:

RIndigenous Elders around the world teach a fundamental love
and respect for all living things. This is why Our Elders Speak is an
appropriate title for this global project and book on Indigenous
Elders.S
RThe more Our Elders Speak project increases the global contract
with the old ones, and brings out their teachings, I am sure more
people will be blessed with a healthier, more natural focus in their
lifestyle.S
ROur Elders and Medicine People are still in communion with
Nature and the Great Spirit, and when an Elder speaks it is sometimes
a blessing from our good Creator.S

>From Rolling Thunder - Spiritual teacher and internationally respected
traditional healer:

RTo bring about the healing of an individual or a nation depends
on respect for all things that have life including the rocks, the
mountains and the waters. We should show our respect for all things
and all people, and we should respect the differences. We call on the
animals, the four-leggeds, the lightning, the thunder, the wind, the
eagle -- we call on all these spirits in order to attain these healing
powers.S

The Late Anthropologist Margaret Mead has said:

RNever doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed
individuals can change the world. Indeed, itUs the only thing that ever
has.S

Harvey Milk was a supervisor (think "city councilman"); George Moscone
was mayor; both were killed.
