Just passing this on...
From Tom Tucker
I am absolutely not making this incident up
[...]
Just for the record, this is a plagiarized exerpt from a column by Dave
Barry, a columnist for the Miami Herald.
..."The heathen, may he rot in baby oil, dared repeat a news story that
our Davey did report in the Holy Column (blessed be the syndicated)!"...

Hey man, he didn't just repeat the news story, he described the video tape
in the identical word-for-word language that Barry used to describe it.
Heck, the evidence is staring you right in the face in the excerpt above --
Barry probably has a copyright on the phrase "I am not making this up".

I would expect that being immersed in baby oil would prevent rotting.

Attention flamers:

Alan at the Laboratory for Computer Science, a gentleman and a scholar, has
informed me that the second-hand report which aldo@think.com derided as a
plagiarized excerpt from a Dave Barry column, to which derision I
consequently added my own in the belief that aldo, in leaping to the defense
of the internationally-recognized syndicated humor columnist, was having an
acute knee-jerk reaction to a perceived threat to Barry's supremacy. The
original report, I claimed, appeared to be merely a second-hand report of the
content of a videotaped news presentation covering a situation that was
humorous without the addition of Mr. Barry's somewhat humorous style.

In fact, it was not the humorous story which aldo felt was plagiarized, but
the presentation of the humorous story which, it turns out, was identical to
Barry's presentation. Given this information, which I received from Alan
today, I have to say that if the words used to report this story were in fact
identical to those used by Barry to relate his second-hand report of a
humorous event, then the composition was in fact plagiarized in the sense
that the person who forwarded the copy that was forwarded to him did not
report the "original" source of the words. I regret that I did not check my
references before attacking aldo's claims, and apologize for any ill will
that may have resulted from that action.

Sincerely,

The Rt. Rev. K'houtek Hypen-Dache

P.S. Please allow my ad hominem attacks on Dave Barry zealots as a group to
stand as offered. He's not that funny. K---

Yup. Check out "In Re the Matter of David B." for the gory details.
"David Brom v. Minnesota" for his habeas appeal. You can get them on
WESTLAW in the MINN-CS directory. I'll post citations and maybe full
text later.
