The Masons _claim_ descent from the Knights Templar. I 'm not buying it
(because ``Bob'' didn 't sell it to me---remember ``Bob''? No, I think
not).
Personally, I think a handful of listening-to-Dr.-Gene-Scott-on-the-shortwave--
set'ers is descended from the Knights Templar.

Then again there used to be a country that had a Hammer and
Dividers on its state flag and all its coins etc. Obviously
masonic symbols. The country completely disappeared a year or
so back which should be a warning...

Well, _Handbook of Secret Organizations_ by William J. Whalen (1966, The Bruce
Publishing Company) casts a pretty wide net: 47 organizations from Acacia to
the Modern Woodmen of America (with the Mafia in the middle). The copy in the
Westford Mass Public Library has been "edited" with a razor blade, but some
antient slackmaster re-penned the missing words (maybe even the right words).

At the risk of actually posting a serious message to this list, I'd like to
point out that the badge of the Order of the Eastern Star has no connection
whatsoever to the sort of things that we usually associate with inverted
5-pointed stars. The choice of that symbol was *real* unfortunate, and Dr.
Rob Morris, the founder of the Order, should have known better. In New
York, the badge is at least shown right-side-up.
The Eastern Star is a so-called "androgynous co-masonic" group,
i.e. men and women are both allowed to join, and it is considered by Masons
to be affiliated with, though not part of, Freemasonry.
In point of fact, most of the members are nice grey-haired ladies
who would be utterly shocked to learn that their beloved symbol has such a
horrible other meaning.

nope, our masons here are just as masonic as masons elsewhere.
[say anything?...i didn't think so....]
Yup, I've known masons whose old biddy wives were in OES and so they had both
emblems on their family trucksters...
