Church Anti-Choicers

Cardinal Roger Mahoney will address a prayer vigil by an anti-abortion
group called Helpers of God's Precious Infants on Saturday, January 18,
in front of Planned Parenthood's East L.A. clinic -- but pro-choice
forces intend to counter the demonstrations in a novel way. Planned
Parenthood is asking pro-choicers to "pledge a picket" and donate money
for each anti-choicer at the vigil. This tactic is designed to ensnare
the anti-choice movement in a Catch-22: The more people who show up,
the more money Planned Parenthood gets.

[...]

Archdiocese spokesman Bill Rivera says he had not heard about the "pledge
a picket" program, but that he doubts it will dissuade the demonstrators
from showing up. For Planned Parenthood, the program is both "a chance
to get back at the picketers, to turn a disturbing situation into a pro-
choice action" and "a lighthearted turn on the issue, a way to have a
little fun -- at their expense."
