Yes, read "the Naked Lunch" and "the Ticket that Exploded"
and "Nova Express". The other novels are not as good but
still worth a read. Burroughs is a good introduction to
experimental fiction especially for anyone brought up on
scifi. His techniques aren't as original as he
would like to make out. He was certainly prefigured by the
surrealists (Breton, Peret etc), by Roussel's word games,
not to mention James Joyce's flows of conciousness and Gertrude
Stein's repetitive ramblings.
William Burroughs fans intending to embark on a a career of
cutting-up sound fragments using the latest computer technology
will be enthralled to discover that there are commercial (?)
recordings of the great man's voice. These give a feel for the
experiments (well, the audible ones anyway) that WSBurroughs and
Ian Sommerville made through the 60's and 70's and are a good
starting point for further cut-ups.
I have copies of :-
"Nothing Here Now But The Recordings" -from the archives of
William S.Burroughs Industrial Records IR0016
"Breakthrough In Grey Room" - more from the archives
Sub Rosa Sub33005-8
"The Doctor Is On The Market" readings by WSB from his works
Les Temps Modernes Recordings V:XX
I suspect that the net-deities would be unhappy if I digitised
the entire corpus and e-mailed it to the SubG digestifier. If
anyone is interested, I could arrange lo-tech access.
