Silence can be a slackful experience. In college a few of us established
a silent breakfast table. After a long night of sacred noise, this was
required to adjust to pink-world. The initiation protocol was:

First the uninitiated walks up and chirps, "Mind if I join you," or "Good
morning!" Everyone at the table would look up and glare in silence. At
this point, the pinks were scared off. The more adventurous would join
us. If they still didn't get it and tried to engage in the lively art
of conversation (this was in Chicago) we'd give them a polite, yet stern,
"shuddup." There was usually enough of us that got up early enough for
breakfast to keep the table going.
