FLORIDA AIRPORT IS WORLD'S BIGGEST EXPORTER OF THE DEAD

FORT LAUDERDALE -- Each year about 4,000 dead bodies are
flown out of Hollywood-Fort Lauderdale International
Airport, making it the apparent world leader in that
category of exports, airline experts say.
South Florida's other major airports in Maiami,
Palm Beach and Pinellas counties are well under 3,000
per year, according to the Florida Department of Health.
"It's a very big buisness ... because you have
so many people who retire down there and want to be buried
where they came from," said Tim Neale, spokesman for the
Airline Transport Association in Washington.
Transporting dead bodies is a big business for
local funeral homes. Fred Howard's, one of Broward County
's biggest homes, ships 350 bodies a year out of the
area by air.
Airlines go to great pains to keep passengers
from seeing the bodies. The coffings are put in
packing crates to disguise their contents, and are taken
to the shipping center in vans, not hearses.
