Mr November fails to inspire everyone
MONTREAL -- A United Church minister who posed nude for
Malebox magazine and who appears as Mr. November in this year's
Forge Leather calendar is suing to get his job back.
Rev. Christopher Bowen was suspended for six months last
November after a copy of the magazine was mailed to the church
office in the Montreal suburb of Roxboro. But church members
weren't told until February.
Bowen's congregation remains split over the issue. Barbara
L'Eplattenier, a member of the committee that hired Bowen, is
furious over the way church officials have handled it.
"I question our leadership," she says. "When I heard about
the pictures) I laughed."
But others are not so amused.
"When you see your minister in pornographic pictures, how
do you face him on the pulpit?" asks Ed Furcha, the interim
minister at Roxboro United Church.
In documents filed in Quebec Superior Court, Bowen claims
the photos were taken before he was ordained, they were published
without his consent, and that he is embarrassed by them.
But Alan Dean of Malebox says Bowen signed a consent form
last March permitting them to be published.
