Two beauts from the local section of the Centre Daily Times, 5-8-93:

Mother Charged with Using Skewer to Beat 9-Year Old

A Ferguson Township woman faces criminal charges after she allegedly
beat her son with a shish kabab skewer for receiving a C on his report
card. ... Court records said the boy was beaten about his back, arms
and legs, causing welts and severe bruising over a large portion of
his body. When she was interviewed on April 23, according to the records,
Ma told police she had hit the boy because of the C and also because she
felt he had been lying to her for weeks about turning in his homework
on time. ... She said she struck his buttocks first but--when he ran
away--she became angry and chased him around the house, hitting him,
the records said. ... Lynn Ma's husband, Yushieh, was contacted by
telephone Friday night. He said that the family had no comment.

Couple: Baby Placed in Oven Is Fine

The parents of an infant who was placed in a microwave oven say they
don't understand why police have charged them with endangering the
child. "The kid is fine. They're making a big deal out of nothing,"
said Timothy Ketterman of the Pittsburgh suburb of Munhall. Ketterman
said the baby's mother fell asleep April 21, 10 feet from the baby's
playpen. The 14-year-old removed the baby from the pen, placed him
in the oven and turned it on, Ketterman said. The teen removed the
infant after two seconds when a 12-year-old cousin threatened to tell
the mother, Ketterman said.
