It 's not that Letterman wants "Bob" to peer out at a laughing audience
(by hiding That Hideous Face from the audience until the punch-line); he 's
attempting to use a scaled-down (by partially-hidden) version of the the
Image to induce the fear/laughter response in his audience.
Hmmm, maybe all those "fake" appearances by Edward "Gein" Sullivan on the
Letterman show aren't so fake at all; after all, "Bob" (or as he is known
in this wise, "Baron Dobbsdi") has a great deal of pull in regions infernal
and valhallal. The very fakiness of the these manifestations may be
regarded as poof prositive that they are of The Piped (e.g., compare how
fraudulent, garish, and cheesy they are with the rest of the Church).
Incidentally, for a truly SubChristian author, you could do far worse
than Ratibor-Ray Jurjevich, author of "Contemporary Faces of Satan"
(original title: "The Phallic Cult of Freudism"), which allows one to
trace Stephen Jay Gould's intellectual lineage all the way back to the
Cathars, and Freud's (and Reform and Conservative Judaism 's) to the
false Messiah Jakob Frank (and backwards to the Kabbalah and Mystery Babylon).
