} What the heck is the purpose of the following dingbat
}
} (dingbat thingee)
}
} that appears in the "topics" section of recent digests?

You'll be seeing those from now on. It's a new invention here.

That dingy is to prevent ENTIRE bounced Digests (which sometimes get
bounced incorrectly to SUBGENIUS@mc.lcs.mit.edu instead of to
subgenius-REQUEST@mc.lcs.mit.edu) from getting interpreted as digest
Submissions and included in the next digest.

We've seen that problem in the past. Two or three days of incorporated
bounces can get Mighty Ugly.

Of course that means that any messages that contain a (dingbat thingee)
will also get identified as mere bounces and not included. So don't put
any (dingbat thingee)s in your submissions to the digest, right?
