Many things.
It's having a good set of materials.
I have over 800 hours of prerecorded sounds--
insects, animals, humans, machines, media, data,
news, propaganda, movies, documentaries,
poetry, singing, screaming, dying,
snuff films, soap operas, commercials, telephone conversations,
radio pledges, static, white noise, pink noise, 1/f noise,
wind, surf, rain, snow, fire,
frequency sweeps, engines, motors,
earthquakes, murders, chases, prosecution,
medical operations, absurd situations, political speeches,
infommercials, police radio, cellular telephone,
arguments, threats, drug deals, phonesex, 900 numbers, gunshots,
baby monitor, space shuttle satellite linkup,
shortwave, medium wave, X band, Ku band, UHF, 870-890 Mhz,
sex sounds, laughing, crying, screaming,
listener mind overload.

Each week I select from 40-70 tapes to bring to my show.
I also include some previous tapes of Disease Transmission;
certain (well-known) parts get repeated throughout my shows,
giving it that special flavor.
Besides tape sources, I may also use
multiple CD players, vocal cords, multiple
turntables, orifices, special effects,
samplers simultaneously.
The outwardly visible components
are probably the easiest to explain.
But probably the most important elements
are the philosophy and technology
utilized/exploited.
You've probably heard of such products/technologies as
subliminal,
paraliminal,
hemi-sync,
polysync,
holophonic,
biosonic,
psycho-acoustic,
biofeedback,
brain-entrainment,
alpha-theta waves,
polyphasic, polytonic,
well i use all these and more.
it's the nova heat. when did they get here? tachyon energy.
you don't have to think it to experience it (or residuals).
if a tape just appears you don't just play it. Could be any description
play it and it gets expressed in present time. This culture's a mess

certain sounds trigger certain brainwaves.
Triggering certain brainwaves induces certain experiences.
By normalizing the vector space of brainwave measurements
and mapping to the experience domain,
we can determine certain characteristics
of the sound that produces desired effects.
