When I talked to Don Joyce (or was it Mark Hosler) about the disc,
they said that they were swindled into the project by thinking that
it was a true Dobbs Approved thing. (Which, it apparently was NOT).
I've got 2 tapes from a friend of mine in Canada of this "Bob"'s
radio show. It's a typical talk show that borrows some of the
terminology of the Church and rehashes it in a way to make it look
"serious". The end result is the boring dialogs that you can find
on the disc.
And so, we are left with a quandry: Should we obey Church mandate and
avoid all Canadian imitations? Or, should we who are Negativland
completists commit the sin and pick up the disc only for the one track.
(The rest of the disc is either boring philisophical mumbo-jumbo or
mediocre E-Z listening house music).
In my case, I found it used for $2, so, I figured what the hell. And,
to atone for my sin, I went and ordered a T-shirt from the Church.
But, Bob's Media Ecology (and subsequent remixes) are NOT condoned
by the true-blue American Church of the SubGenius in any way, shape,
or form.

I was in touch with both "Bob Dean" and Stang at the time the second BME
disc came out. Dean used to have a radio show on CKLN in Toronto -- all
the talk you hear on the disc is taken from the show. On it he claimed to
be "Bob Dobbs" and preached a very wordy, somewhat convoluted philosophy
that owed much more to McLuhan than it did to SubGenius. Stang was pissed
because this guy took credit for inventing the CoSG and not only never paid
a cent to the real Church, but was busy putting Stang and his apostles down
in this widely distributed format. I did a radio interview with Dean where
he just laughed about how funny it was to hear Stang all perturbed. As for
recruiting N'g'land, Coldcut, Steinski and the rest, I think that it was
basically the work of Dean's producer, who seemed to be a pretty talented
guy; the first BME disc is really beautifully produced, even if it does
veer into pink disco territory every once in a while. But in Stang's
telling of the tale, all of the contributors to BME II were recruited under
some sort of "false pretenses" and were ripped off financially on the
project. I don't know any more details about that part of it. But I
suggest you destroy your copy immediately.
What I want to know is whatever became of Bob Dean? I'm certain he's
lurking on the internet somewhere...
