Spent the last day or so cruising Toostoned with the illustrious Dr.
Notaw, who, as you may or may not know, is originally from Denmark and
currently resides in the U.K. It was quite interesting to get his
take on the whole Attack on America(R) situation. I think what really
blew his mind the most was the gushing outpouring of mindless
patriotism: minivans and 4x4s with multiple flags pasted on various
components, business with removable-type signs out front that all had
"God Bless America" or variations of the same. The capper, however,
was the car dealership on Speedway that had the 30ft x 50ft flag
hanging over the showroom. It wasn't until the third or forth pass
that I noticed that it happened to be a *Mitsubishi* dealership. (I
felt like calling up and saying something like "If you were *real*
Americans, you would be selling American cars.") My explanation to
Notaw was that a pathetically large proportion of American populace's
knowledge of current events never extends past the sports page, so
that when something geopolitically *bad* like this happens, they
become quite confused and a retreat into mindless patriotism is their
only source of comfort. Dr. Notaw seemed nonplussed by this
explanation, and it got to the point where I cringed whenever we
passed another half-wit display of flag-waving. Still, I guess
whatever assuages the fear and confusion in their tiny pink minds is a
good thing. It may help reduce further mindless attacks on anyone
that "looks like a raghead." No doubt that the waste of spermatazoa
in Mesa that killed the Sikh gas-station attendant just thought that
he (the spermatazoa waste) was just being "a good American."

OTHER POINTLESS THOUGHTS:

Note to those that bitched about Stang's "Osama Bin Laden/CIA
Operative 1979-1989" graphic: clearly you can't take a joke. FUCK
YOU! Burn your membership cards and move to Lynchburg, Virginia.

I saw one of those online "quick polls" yesterday that was asking
whether the resondents would be willing to accept more "government
involvement" in their lives if it meant more security against
terrorism. The poll results were around 70% in favor and 30% against.
Scary. More than two-thirds of the people who resonded are willing
to give up their civil liberties ("government involvement," my ass)
for the illusion of safety. This chafed me enough to look up the
original Franklin quote that I'd misquoted here last week and will
share with you now in it's accurate entirety:

"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary
safety deserve neither liberty or safety."
-Benjamin Franklin, _Historical Review of Pennsylvania_,
1759.

What's ironic to me is ... do they -really- think that more government
and less liberty could stop something like this? Would have stopped
something like this?

There's always a weak point. There's always a means if somebody
really has the will.

Giving up all our civil liberties would not stop terrorism.

When civil liberties are outlawed, only outlaws will have civil liberties.

Grrrrrr. I know hundreds of people liike that. They are all gung-ho
for the upcoming war, whereas two weeks ago their knowledge of
politics and geography was, as you said, limited to the sports page.
My dad and stepmom have put one of those newspaper page flags in their
front window. Before, anyone doing that would have been one of those
"right-wing Christian extremist conspiracy theorists" wrapping
themselves in the flag.

I wonder which U.S. cities they are prepared to lose in this war?

Ask them a question: "tell me, where IS Afghanistan?"

You know, in reading the subject line it occurred to me
just how clumsy this country's name is when rabidly
chanting it. There's just too many syllables in it.

I propose that we Americans change our name to make
it easier for wild eyed patriots to bark.

I just can't decide which new name would be better,
"Chunka", "Hoot", or "Squee".

I think it's pronounced 'mairker'. In some circles.

<snip>

I've hear it pronounced "merca". If you chant "merca, merca,
merca..." it begins to sound almost Farsi. Of course, there is
always the old time honored "U!S!A! U!S!A!". Imagine though if it
had come to be called "Vespucciland". Now that's a clumsy chant!
