HONG KONG - The United States is planning a massive
show of force in the Pacific Ocean near China to
register a point with Beijing.

In an exercise codenamed Operation Summer Pulse 04,
it is expected to arrange for an unprecedented SEVEN
aircraft carrier strike groups (CSGs) to rendezvous
in waters a safe distance away from the Chinese
coastline - but still within striking distance -
after mid-July.

This will be the first time in US naval history that
it sends seven of its 12 CSGs to just one region...

Yep, it's official; someone near the top has completely lost their
fucking mind.

That, as they say, is the 64 dollar question.

Here are some speculations, though, that may have
something to do with it, individually or collectively:

1) The Chinese leadership is currently broken into
several antagonistic factions, some of whom are very
warlike. The old leader retained much of his power
before turning over the job to the new guy, and there
are warlords running the countryside. Intrigues are
everywhere in that "one party state."

2) China has been emplacing THOUSANDS of short range
missiles on its coast opposite Taiwan, at a rate of
perhaps 100 a month. All the while becoming a lot
more openly threatening towards Taiwan, that some in
China have almost a fanatical desire to conquer, even
with horrific losses on both sides.

3) Oil. Right now China and Japan are in contention,
as diplomatically as bad as anything since WWII, over
a proposed oil pipeline from Russia. They both want
it, desperately, and are in a bidding war to get it.
China is facing a catastrophic energy crunch, and soon.
Oil, BTW was a major factor in the Pacific War in WWII.

4) China has been investing obscene amounts of money
to upgrade its military structure, buying anything and
everything it can, especially for its navy and air
forces. If there is a piece of military hardware on the
market for the last 20 years, China wants it. Especially
the high-tech stuff, radar, anti-missiles, C&C planes,
and satellites.

5) China published a white paper about 10 years ago
calling for the use of "alternative means" in fighting
the US, basically terrorist-style attacks to distract
the US from protecting Taiwan. The estimated that if
the two US naval installations at Bremerton and San Diego
were interfered with, it would effectively disable the
US Pacific Fleet.

6) The US, for its part, has long been involved with a
plan to counter the Chinese threat, including a massive
redesign of its naval, air and ground and space forces.
Our latest ship designs seem to be solely to neutralize
the Chinese coastal areas, and the US has established
bases in ALL of the Central Asian -istans, which could
threaten China.

7) India, for its part, has become so nervous about
China that it has launched a massive build-up of its
navy, which is now quite modern and threatening. They
have also acquired, with the blessing of the US, tons
of cutting edge military tech from Israel, which now
all faces China. The Indians still remember their last
brief war so intend to thump the Chinese if they try it
again.

8) Everybody have fun tonight. Everybody Wang Chung
tonight. X-Day will be soon, and somebody has to
destroy the world.

The Xists said we'd be spirited away on the pleasure saucers while the
Pinks were left behind to fry in Hell on Earth. You'll notice they
never said anything about destroying the earth.

Why would they bother, when the Pinks are perfectly willing to take care
of that little chore for them?
