New Planet of the Apes movie mini-review

The other night we rented that Tim Burton remake. I knew it was in no
way attempting to duplicate the 1968 movie, so I had no trouble with
it. Some elements were way too predictable, but for the most part it
kept me entertained. Gorgeous art design. The "shock ending" was
lucidrously telegraphed, if you ask me, but then I had read the
original book, and this movie ironically follows the book a little more
closely. The way the ape characters leap all over the place and behave
generally more like real apes was a treat for me.

More bothersome than anything in the movie was a special featurette
that the distributor tacked on to the ending of the rental videotape.
IF YOU WERE TOO DUMB TO FIGURE OUT HOW THE APE PLANET GOT THAT WAY,
this little featurette explained it to you even MORE simply, using
expository dialog clips from the movie you just saw.

The first Planet of the Apes film -- which I saw FIFTEEN TIMES at age
15 -- basically made you say,

"Wow! Humans sure are awful, with their lies and wars! Good thing the
apes took over!"

The remake of Planet of the Apes basically makes you say,

"Wow! Apes sure are awful, with their lies and wars! Good thing we use
them for medical experiments!"

I watched for and caught the Pipe Smoking Ape, seen from behind in the
foreground as the captive humans are first carted into the ape city.
Ahhhhh.

But didn't you see the implication? If hu-mans and
apes live together peacefully, then the apes (Yetisyny)
will take over, BUT IF THE HU-MANS *FIGHT* the apes
(Yetisyny), then HU-MANS will be victorious, despite
being *clearly* inferior!
