Success Through Smallness

By tzimisces@cueball.demon.co.uk (John Tzimisces)

I came across an I Ching site on the Web a couple of nights back
(http://cad.ucla.edu/repository/useful/iching.html) and to test it out I
asked the question

'What can you tell me about "Bob"?'.

Here is the amazing divination I received:

The Hexagram

31. Hsien / Influence (Wooing)

The Judgement

Influence. Success.
Perseverance furthers.
To take a maiden to wife brings good fortune.

The Image

A lake on the mountain:
The image of Influence.
Thus the superior man encourages people to approach him
By his readiness to receive them.

The Lines

* Nine in the fifth place means:
The influence shows itself in the back of the neck.
No remorse.

Six at the top means:
The influence shows itself in the jaws, cheeks, and tongue.

Upper Trigram

TUI (Joyous)
This represents delight, but, also incompleteness. This can be associated
with food and drink, or, as with an exuberence of pleasure to exclusion
of certain things, ruin.

Lower Trigram

KEN (Keeping still)
This represents mountains, and hence the lack of change. It is still and
quiet. As mountains can be formed by collecting particles, this symbol
can also represent accumulation (as K'AN). Also completion has been
attributed to this symbol.

Upper Nuclear Trigram

CHI'EN (Creative)
This represents Heaven. It is noble, distant and firm. It represents
the masculine and is active and creative (perpetual). CHI'EN is energy
while K'UN is form.

Lower Nuclear Trigram

SUN (Gentle)
This represents the wind. As wind comes from the far off, this symbol
represents distance or distant places. As the wind travels everywhere, this
symbol represents penetration and interaction.

The Hexagram

56. Lu / The Wanderer

The Judgement

The Wanderer. Success through smallness.
Perseverance brings good fortune
To the wanderer.

The Image

Fire on the mountain:
The image of the Wanderer.
Thus the superior man
Is clear-minded and cautious
In imposing penalties,
And protracts no lawsuits.

Upper Trigram

LI (Clinging)
This represents fire. Violence, harsh change, and understanding are
all associated with this symbol.

Lower Trigram

KEN (Keeping still)
This represents mountains, and hence the lack of change. It is still and
quiet. As mountains can be formed by collecting particles, this symbol
can also represent accumulation (as K'AN). Also completion has been
attributed to this symbol.

Upper Nuclear Trigram

TUI (Joyous)
This represents delight, but, also incompleteness. This can be associated

of certain things, ruin.

Great Dobbs, look at the names of the hexagrams: 'Wooing' and 'The Wanderer'. There's even a quote about unfinished business and fire/violence/harsh change in the near future !

'Wooing' speaks of a persuasive man who has influence and success.
He is noble, distant but firm and, like the wind, travels everywhere.
The moving lines that indicate important aspects of this divination
- the emphasis is on the neck, jaws, cheeks and tongue. Isn't this
a clear reference to the importance of the Dobbshead? It's also a
guide to those who worry about portraying the back of "Bob"'s head -
there will be 'no remorse'. Will Contemplation of The Invisible Neck of
"Bob" now be compulsory for SubGenii?

There's even a link between "Bob"'s huge good luck and "Connie"
- 'To take a maiden to wife brings good fortune'.

The lower trigram of the second hexagram represents the accumulation
of much from many sources (Slack, money ...). And I love the backhanded
reference to the Church of Scientology: the 'superior man ...
protracts no lawsuits'.

But can some wise Doktor enlighten me about 'Success through smallness'?
