With America imploding faster than a pair of silicon implants stuffed
in a microwave, I'm left with a curious dilemma: stay in America and
go down with the ship, or move to Europe?
If I were rich, the answer would be simple. America's cardboard
economy is falling apart at the seams. Right now it's just employees
and minor stockholders and local governments and ill-conceived tech
firms getting burned, but when push comes to shove, the wealthy will
begin ganging up on each other. If I were a rich American, I would
move to Europe at once, so that increasingly desperate American
swindlers wouldn't take my money and valuables, during this mighty
political pendulum swing deep into the black heart of fascism.
But I am not rich. Being poor, I wonder: Should I get out before the
hammer falls, or stick around for the chaos?
Any poor person remaining in America faces ever-increasing odds of
being killed or imprisoned. It will take slave labor to get the
economy back on its feet, assuming the System as we know it survives,
and assuming you don't consider the way things are today as already
slave labor; the infrastructure for an unprecendented war against
American freedoms is being laid now by Ashcroft, et al.
We haven't seen the last outbreak of germ warfare or big exploding
buildings here, either - and biotech is blazing madly into uncharted
waters too, which seems exciting and fun until you realize we're
basically committing alchemy with a bunch of life forms that all have
two thing in common: we have no idea how they'll turn out, and they
all have to EAT EAT EAT.
The risks aside, America's next decade or so will be marked by a lot
of wealth and property rapidly changing hands. Imagine a
300-million-person game of Monopoly with 50 million crooked bankers,
and 80 million armed would-be crooked bankers, and the remaining bulk
mostly either brain-dead sheep or blind kamikaze hicks. Enterprising
persons - and I like to consider myself enterprising - will make some
good profits, if they can figure a way to keep them.
In the chaos that is to follow, and has already begun, the potential
for profit at the expense of the normals is great. From looting to
taking over suddenly abandoned properties to speculation to honest
business to salvage enterprises to fraud, some lucky Americans will be
standing in the right spot to catch the cookies falling out of the
cookie jar that the richies increasingly have to fight each other for
room to stick their hands in.
What it all boils down to is: Should I stay or should I go?

What you just said about America is true about every other industrialized
nation, squared, save Switzerland, and even they are beginning to succumb.
No point in going elsewhere. It's only massive support from us that keeps
them going: when we go, they go. And as soon as we're too broke to keep the
peacekeepeers there, it'll be right back to fighting like Kilkenny cats. The
Euro will drag them all into howling barbarism together one way or another.
Good riddance, I say. Stay here. It'll be much more exciting: we've got way
more guns.

You haven't been following the latest European "security measures", have
you? They're not as blatant and bumbling about it in the USA. I'd
rather live under an incompetent tyrant than one that manages to hide
what it does.
I've got BAD news for ya, sista: The up-and-coming soon to be top
biotech country is the People's Republic of China. In the PRC, there
aren't any silly regulations or limits. As of about a decade ago, they
have the know-how. As of about five years ago, they have the money.
Right now, the train is building up steam. You think that US commercial
concerns can abuse biotech? Remember how people used to complain about
how much pollution US industry spewed out--and THEN we discovered how
much pollution can REALLY spew out in communist police states like the
USSR!

They won't throw you in prison for quite as many things in some of
those European countries, but in others they'll throw you in jail
forever for stuff YOU had thought were GOOD DEEDS.
Like that African country where they threw the German gentleman in
prison for eating pussy. I don't think they'll do that in Europe, but
they're touchy about other things that you wouldn't expect.
Also, if you move to Europe -- DON'T FOLLOW POPE BLACK!!!

That's a common myth. From personal observation I can dispel a few of

FACT: Blacks and Asians in Europe are also better looking than Blacks

FACT: European beauty, whether in the people, the culture, or the
architecture, comes through SLACK.
MYTH: Europe has acquired sophistication because its culture is older.
FACT: In every important respect the US is much older than Europe,
having maintained internal continuity for roughly 400 years. That's
why we've kept many of the uglier traditions England did away with
ages ago (death penalty, reaction to nipples like a vampire to a
cross, etc). Europe in contrast has aquired sophistication by
re-inventing itself every 15 years, generating healthy, natural
cynicism.
MYTH: European women are sweaty / stinky / hairy / etc.
FACT: Yeti genes, plus silly rumors started by lily-livered Merkin men
who cannot otherwise account for a strong woman.
MYTH: European women are passive to sexual harrassment.
FACT: European women are active sexual harrassers.
MYTH: European women are born in Europe.
FACT: Just as transvestite males are often more feminine than females,
a number of the most European women here have settled from somewhere
else. I suspect that most of the really interesting American women
are actually Europeans who haven't figured out how to move here yet.
MYTH: European women are either really X, or really Y (fat / thin,
pretty / ugly, feminine / masculine, liberal / fascist, etc.)
FACT: European culture encourages people to exaggerate their
attributes, in contrast to American culture which pushes towards
hiding or smoothing away differences. Thus Europeans take every bit
as much time developing their flaws as practicing their advantages.
There are average boring Europeans, of course, but they are invisible.
MYTH: European culture is being overwhelmed by America.
FACT: That's just another of those 15-year reinventions. Europe is
actually being overwhelmed by Europe at the moment. On the other
hand, there's good reason to think that American culture will be
overwhelmed by the Europeans, in a generation or two.
MYTH: Europeans hate Americans.
FACT: Europeans hate America. They think of Americans as spoiled
children, far too mindless to either love or hate. Not too different
from how some of us think of humans on our more generous days.
